    Simple Minds
    November 3, 2009
    Arena, Vienna

To say the truth I was afraid. I was afraid because the last time I saw Simple Minds they were fantastic. The best thing I’d ever seen. I was recovering few months from it I can tell… haha. That was in 2006 and now more than 3 years later I bought a ticket to their concert and I’m on the way to Vienna.

It was rainy and cold evening. As expected when we arrived at the venue there was nearly anybody except of the few local punks working at the place. What we heard was the soundcheck which sounded as good as if the show already started with no one in but the members of the band. So the first impression was fantastic (and it didn’t lie).

I don’t remember when the show started. But when the music of the likes like Nouvelle Vague or The Clash finished, the lights went off and the intro began. Simple Minds one by one came finally on stage and the stage was theirs from this early beginning until the very last note. The show started in grand style withMoscow Underground. This song is the perfect opener to the powerful show. The dynamics of the song and the band suggests a rather fabulous night. What Mel Gaynor is doing here is just unbelievable.

    Street Fighting Years
was a great surprise eventhough Jim Kerr had hinted before they’d probably play it tonight in Vienna. It’s a hard-to-describe song. It has an excellent gradation with a fantastic finale. “I think it was good… or nearly good.” said Jim after the song. Jim, “perfect” is the word! Anyway the best things were still to come.

As promised, Sons & Fascination made it to the setlist. And man, what a choice! Not just it’s my favourite album if I’d have to choose only one, this song is just amazing. The sound is so fresh, sounds like it was made now, not 28 years ago. And the live version on this tour is surely one of the highlights of the concert. Futuristic sounds, the early 1980s in its best – young bands listen to this! It has the most beautiful synths sounds played by Andy Gillespie, brilliant guitars that only Charlie Burchill can make and unreal bass lines that Eddie Duffy knows so well. And in the end it’s not the end because these kinda dark melodies (with masterpiece lyrics from Jim Kerr) fade straight into The American, another masterpiece.

A classic song See The Lights which can’t miss from the Simple Minds concert was the next. Although it’s not my favourite, this time it was better than ever. Followed by I Travel - a song full of energy from the 1980 album Empires And Dance - the show was speeding up the tempo once again. In Trance As Mission, in trance, in dream, raise arm you who were not! Each of the instruments was playing its own thing and all in all what was created was a dreamy atmosphere which everyone who was present could not resist but sank into as soon as the song began with a beautiful guitar intro so typical for Charlie.

Wake up on brilliant days as the first tones of Someone Somewhere In Summertime broke into the air. By that time, there’s no doubt that Somebody Up There Likes Simple Minds and of course us – the lucky audience of the first gig of the Simple Minds Graffiti Soul tour. So while the band played this short instrumental song Jim Kerr had few minutes (to be exact 2 minutes and some seconds) for a really short break so that he could come back on stage in full strength and start another groovy combo of Once Upon A Time from the 1985 so called album + One Step Closer from 2002’s Cry album. One Step Closerlive creates kind of a party atmosphere as Crazy remix did this summer on the U2 360° Tour but without the need of the Claw and giant screens above. Everyone in the audience was swinging, dancing, singing or doing something to express their feelings and the band was on fire.

As the show broke into its second half the band’s globaly most wellknown hit got its place in the setlist. Do I have to name it? Rock me, Amadeus. And after that there was some more space for the new songs. Graffiti Soul is one of them. The whole idea of this “graffiti soul” is just as great as the whole song is. “There’s nothing I’d change in my graffiti soul…”. Rockets – the first single from the new album yet now works fantastic within the crowd.

The set was closed with another surprise – Let It All Come Down and the perfect live song New Gold Dream. If this was the very last song of the concert, I’m sure no one would leave the place until the band comes back on stage again. So they better did. And I can tell you I was so happy to hear Home again because it seems to me that it’s become even more popular live than on the Black and White tour in 2006. Alive And Kicking, Belfast Child with people singing like in choir and the very last song Ghostdancing and that was it. The end.

Just like a moment in time that was the gig. Kiss & Fly and sooner than you realise it’s over. There’s only one thing that I regret. I forgot to bring a camera so that I could capture all those fascinated faces around me including my brother’s who’s only 17 years old. Anyway, what can you do when you see a band enjoying themselves playing together, a singer hitting all those high notes, dancing, smiling on people, guitar player playing so great, smiling on everyone, bassist rocking and singing, the keyboards player doing his best and the best rock’n’roll drummer in the world?

Simple Minds brought us the true joy and so much positive energy that not just filled up the whole building but also the hearts of us who were there. And in the end, there’s only one last question: Can they be any better? If yes, than I just can’t imagine it. Dream a dream, courage of dreams, see you next time!

  • nic je tu so mnou

    Current mood:apathetic

  • 07/08 and around

On the first day of the new year a voice told me everything's gonna be ok, it's gonna be alright, don't worry. It'll be better
when we take her away for some time and soon it'll be in good order again. In the end it wasn't but I believed it and your
voice believed it too. So I went to sleep again. The voice sounds so distant now.

    Crystals from everywhere

    Wolves from everywhere

    Crystals from everywhere

    Wolves from everywhere

    Hear the 8-bit sound

To the eye there's no wound

    See that starry night

    And colourpants so tight

    It shines so bright

    Still you feel the dark

And your throat is so tight so tight so tight

    now

Dancing and singing, dance away the bits

Dancing and singing, you don't feel the flicks

Dancing and singing say I am ready for the floor

But I was not at all

    Ready for the fall

No one was, for the miss,
    never, you can't be

    Still wandering in the mist

Never you can't be ready for the miss

    Crystals were everywhere

    Wolves were everywhere

    Crystals were everywhere

    Wolves were everywhere

Wake up again morning empty room

When tv's on, but the screen's not

Wake up again morning like in bloom

Outside but feeling like in gloom inside

With a head aching and stomach like on roll

You thought it was so rock'n'roll

Every single night like it's a weekend

But this is the end my only friend the end

    Hear that 8-bit sound

Look the eye there's no wound)

    See that starry night

    And colourpants so tight

    It shines so bright

    Still you feel the dark

And your throat is so tight so tight so tight

    now

Dancing and singing, you don't feel the flicks

Dancing and singing say I am ready for the floor

But I was not at all

    Ready for the fall

    Wolves from everywhere

    Crystals from everywhere

    Wolves from everywhere

    (Are they here to stare)

    (Are they here to stay)

I can't see a sight from the window in my room but I still remember the shiny 90's

So self-piteous, I won't tell you about anything anymore, how the heart swings and so.

So self- piteous. I am sorry for the last thing I could but have never done.
If you only could hear me.

Like if the wolf had been at the gates for that whole year and few times he got
inside and took what he desired the most. Sometimes I see him in the distance.

do you feel the cold drops on your neck
    there's gonna happen something great

    look up,
    do you see the twilight
    up on sky
no one has ever flown so high

something glorious is about to happen
    something to remember
catch the atmosphere, catch the wind
be like a ghost and a thief

    under the stormy sky
you see the concrete in red and white
    there's something in the air
    nothing to scare...you

something glorious is about to happen
    something to remember
catch the atmosphere to your memory
    wow what a story!

    electricity electricity...

something glorious is about to happen
    something to remember
    do you feel the drops?
can you still feel the drops?

    now that it explodes
    now that you get it
    now that it explodes
    wow what a story

catch the atmosphere to your memory
    it's something to remember
    something to remember

    now that it explodes
    now that it explodes

  • steel dream

    After a long time
    Of beeing paralysed
    Finally i can feel there
    Something

    Its not very good
    No its not very good

    Bubbles swim up
    And then they just
    Just blow up
    Only air without oxygen

    Its not very good
    No its not very good

Not only me not only you
    Others have it too
    Like moonquake in your stomach
    I cant understand

    And the music doesnt work
    And the friends dont work
    And the work dont work
    And the bed dont work
    And the family dont work
    And the drugs dont work
    And the hospital dont work
    And THAT think didnt work

    Its been a year now
    Its not happening again
    Its here all the time
    Still keeping on

    Its not very good
    Its not very good

Will you wake up from that steel dream?

  • until the ninja comes

    Neil McCormick:

"So what can I tell you without infringing copyright? It took two listens to find my way into it, which has to be good a thing. It is dense, twisty, shiny, modern pop music, a big mash up of Eno ambience, Edge electricity, rhythm and soul. There are verses and choruses, though not necessarily in that order (and quite often its hard to tell which is which). It doesn't feel the need to hit you over the head, but has the Ninja confidence to sneak up and take you unawares. It makes love like its making war. It hasn't frontloaded all its big guns. There is a surge in the middle perfectly timed to quell any uprising, and a killer twist at the end. It could be the glittering sonic mind meld of pop rock and soul that Zooropa wanted to be. Or maybe, like Bono, I'm am just prone to exaggeration."

..and until the moment of ninja's arrival i'll be just chillin' and listening to The Whitest Boy Alive. :)

..and then maybe.. a moment of surrender!
